As multi-layered a Cab as you'll find from this fine Cabernet growing region, the acidity, density of rich black fruit, smooth, yet firm tannins and abundance of dark licorice, mint and cassis make this an elegant, upscale beauty from one of the area's finest producers.

Very Rich wine. After breathing, tobacco and bramble notes are present. This pairs especially well with heavy foods including red meat.

Dark purple in color with aromas of blackberry jam and spices. It’s full-bodied, jammy, and rich with black currant and blackberries, with underlying tones of spice and a vanilla finish. The finish was moderately lingering with a pronounced currant after-taste. The tannins were smooth and velvety. Mirassou captures the essence of California’s popular Cabernet Sauvignons at an unbeatable price and quality. Along with Bogle, Gnarled Vine, Muirwood, and Angeline, Mirrasou is one of the top five Cabs (in my book) that belong on the table at parties, dinner parties, and social events; $8

Anyone who loves California Cabernet is familiar with Simi, I’m sure. With a long history in wine-making going back to the last quarter of the 19th century, it’s no wonder Simi’s 2006 Cab from Alexander Valley is such a rich, supple, example of classic California Cabernet. Ruby red with aromas of plum, raisins, and dark berries, and flavors consisting of spice (perhaps mint), berries, and some cassis. Tannins are lush and silky and the wine has a lengthy and slightly tobacco finish. The Cab was aged 14 months in 38% new French oak, 25% new American oak. Steve Reeder is the winemaker. Highly recommended for its great taste and value; $16

Folks, this is the value of the year for California Cab Sauv lovers. Bogle earned an impressive 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, which of course says that the wine has impressive complexity, but the important thing is that it just tastes damn good. Aromas of plum, black cherries with chocolate, and flavors of ripe plums, chocolate, and maybe some vanilla on the finish. Speaking of which, the finish is not going anywhere soon. The Cab is structured very well, and balanced. The tannins are silky and luscious. I was shocked for $8. Enjoy with a slightly mild cigar as I did, or with your favorite grilled meats.

Gnarled Vine, as Oak Ridge Winery calls it, is a simple, but delicious Cab from Lodi. Lots of plum and currant with toasty oak makes this a pure pleasure on its own... after an hour of breathing. Smoked a cigar that had a taste of vanilla, which paired well with the wine's finish. Not terribly complex, but quaffable. $10

"Miracle Valley is a small, charming little vineyard located about 45 minutes from Washington, D.C. Last night we had a bottle of their Cabernet Sauvignon, which was terrific. Their 2007 Cab is a Gold Medal winner in the Virginia Wine Lovers Competition and a Bronze Medal winner at the Eastern Seaboard Wine Competition. It's a beautiful garnet color with nice aromas of blackberry, currant and oak. It had soft tannins and exhibited flavors of blackberry, a little plum and oak, and had a nice long and velvety finish. I actually bought this wine without tasting it based on its award winning acclaim, which I never do, but I was happy I did. It's an absolutely gorgeous wine, and we enjoyed it on its own because of its bold taste and silky smooth finish. Price point: $25. It's not a bad price considering decent California Cabs go for about the same. Highly recommended. "

"Nearly 10 years old, this wine is still full and smooth. It is also showing enough structure that leads me to believe it could have another decade in it. Ripe flavors of plum and blackberries mix with hints of cassis, licorice and cocoa powder. "
